Sardine Fishing Industry Value Chain
Millennium Engineer Enterprises uses renewable energy to help women earn more from the catch and sale of sardines (‘dagaa’) on Lake Victoria in Tanzania. Solar-powered fishing lights allow fishermen to fish without kerosene lamps, and solar-powered drying machines significantly reduce the drying time of the fish. With this approach, less diesel is used, there is less food waste due to spoilage of fish and women get more income in a shorter time.
