Favamole makes tasty dips from Dutch fava beans

A creamy dip that not only tastes good, but is also good for the soil. That is the idea behind Favamole. Instead of looking far away for ingredients, the company looks close to home. An ingredient with a lot to offer grows on Dutch farmland: the fava bean. From these beans, they make fresh, creamy dips for a snack board or to enjoy with vegetables and bread. In doing so, Favamole is building a new category of dips based on locally grown beans, rich in protein and better for the environment.

Pulses as an opportunity for the land

Agriculture in the Netherlands is facing big changes. The way we produce food today puts a lot of pressure on nature and farmland. The ground can become exhausted, and farmers often use artificial fertiliser to help crops grow. This works quickly, but it can harm life in the soil. That is why people are looking for other ways of farming. Pulses such as fava beans offer a solution. They take nitrogen from the air and store it in the soil. This makes the soil naturally more fertile, reduces the need for artificial fertiliser and gives plants and soil life more space to grow. By using these beans in everyday food, Favamole helps bring pulses back onto the plate and supports more regenerative ways of farming.

Creamy and full of flavour

Favamole uses these fava beans as the main ingredient for its dips and spreads. The result is a creamy and tasty spread that can be used in many ways: as a dip with vegetables or bread, as a spread on a sandwich, or as a flavourful addition to a wrap or salad. The company is not trying to copy existing products. Instead, it is building its own identity as a plant-based dip with roots in Dutch and European agriculture. At the moment there are two flavours: classic and kimchi. Soon, new and surprising flavours will be added, such as pesto, lemon, oregano and harissa. For now, Favamole mainly focuses on foodservice and professional kitchens, where it is building a strong base before expanding further into retail.

Working together in the food chain

Favamole is more than just a dip. It also represents a broader vision of food and agriculture. The company wants to shorten the distance between farmer, farmland and plate. That is why Favamole works together with farmers, processors and producers to build a short food chain. The fava beans come directly from Dutch farmers to Favamole and are then processed into products for the market. This gives farmers a new place to sell their beans.

The DOEN Foundation supports Favamole because the initiative shows that food production can be done differently. With Dutch fava beans, Favamole brings a local ingredient back to the table. In the coming years, the company wants to grow step by step, building a strong and scalable model based on local sourcing and regenerative farming.

The DOEN Foundation supports Favamole thanks to the players of the Postcode Loterij.
