Films Femmes Afrique gives women in the film sector a platform

In the region around Senegal, democratic values and women’s rights are under pressure. At the same time, more than 60% of Senegal’s population is under the age of 25. This generation wants to see stories that reflect their own experiences. Films Femmes Afrique (FFA) uses film to create a platform for women, dialogue and social change. With a festival every two years and year-round activities, the organization reaches thousands of young people, filmmakers and communities.

A festival by and for women

Every two years, FFA organizes a free film festival in the capital Dakar and twelve other cities across Senegal. For two weeks, more than 80 African films are screened. The films highlight women’s experiences and amplify their voices, but they may be made by both female and male filmmakers. The program also includes films by makers who, due to conflict or other circumstances, now live in other countries. The 2026 edition focuses on the theme: “Women on the Frontline: Engagement, Democracy and the Struggle for Equality.” Films are shown at schools, universities, cultural centers and outdoor locations. In addition to screenings, the festival hosts talks, training sessions and meetings with professionals.

Film clubs and talent development

FFA’s work continues beyond the festival. Throughout the year, the organization runs monthly film clubs at secondary schools. Students watch African films and discuss social issues with one another and with film professionals. During the festival, a group of students forms the jury for the best short film. In this way, young people learn to watch critically and to use their voice. Through the ‘Kino Linguère’ programme, fourteen young women receive a free fourteen-day film training. During the programme, the participants work together to produce two short films.

Space for art in a changing region

Senegal is relatively stable, but it is located in a region where political tensions are rising and women’s rights are under pressure. In this context, space for art and debate becomes even more important. FFA creates that space by screening films by women and organizing conversations about democracy, justice and equality. Activities take place in multiple cities and are free and accessible to a broad audience. This strengthens local ownership and helps build a national network.

Building a strong African film sector together

Since 2003, FFA has built a strong network across African countries. The organization works with filmmakers, schools and cultural partners in several countries. Through trainings, residencies and collaborations, a continuous process of learning and exchange is created.

FFA is therefore more than a festival: it is a platform for female filmmakers and emerging talent. With support from The DOEN Foundation, Films Femmes Afrique can further strengthen its activities in Senegal. In this way, the organization continues to build a more inclusive and resilient African film sector.

The DOEN Foundation supports Films Femmes Afrique thanks to the players of the Postcode Loterij.
