Na de vreselijke ramp in Beiroet zijn onze gedachten bij alle getroffenen in Libanon. Ook verschillende van onze culturele partners zijn direct of indirect keihard geraakt door deze ramp. Normaal gesproken zetten zij zich elke dag in om van Beiroet, Libanon en de Arabische regio een betere plek te maken voor iedereen. Zij creëren vrije ruimte voor verbeelding en prikkelen mensen om voorbij het bestaande te denken, in een context waar dat nauwelijks meer mogelijk is.
In een land dat naast het gevecht tegen de wereldwijde pandemie ook al in een politieke en financiële crisis verwikkeld was, wordt het werk van deze partners met dit nieuwe drama belangrijker dan ooit. Stichting DOEN staat daarom met alle partners, en anders fondsen en financiers, in contact en kijkt zo goed mogelijk wat we voor ze kunnen betekenen.
En dat is nodig. Zo zagen zowel het Arab Fund for Arts and Culture en Ettijahat hun hoofdkantoor verwoest worden, en zijn een aantal medewerkers van Ettijahat zelfs licht gewond geraakt. De andere partners hebben gelukkig geen directe schade, maar zullen desalniettemin de gevolgen voelen.

De komende tijd zullen onze partners ongetwijfeld nieuwe initiatieven starten om het land te helpen er weer bovenop te komen. Hieronder daarom een overzicht met al gestarte initiatieven, donatielinks en links naar hun websites om de ontwikkelingen te blijven volgen.
Financiële steun
- Art Lives: Noodfonds - Noodfonds dat al tijdens de Coronacrisis is opgericht door Mophradat en partners Ettijahat en Action For Hope. Dit fonds is erop gericht om Arabische kunstenaars te helpen in deze moeilijke tijd het hoofd boven water te houden.
- Arab Fund for Arts and Culture: crowdfunding - Kan met het verlies van het hoofdkantoor alle hulp gebruiken. Een crowdfundingscampagne moet helpen de eerste stap naar herstel te zetten.
Culture Resource: solidariteitsfonds - Heeft samen met het Arab Fund for Arts en Culture het Solidarity Fund for Arts and Culture Structures opgezet. Ook dit fonds moet de culturele sector en de kunstenaars helpen om de crisis te overleven.
Giro 555: Samen in actie voor Beiroet - De samenwerkende hulporganisaties hebben Giro 555 geopend voor de slachtoffers van de explosie in Beiroet.
Blijf op de hoogte van andere partners uit Libanon
Tiro Arts Association - Initiatiefnemer achter het Arab Culture and Arts Network. Een online platform dat kunstenaars uit de regio met elkaar verbindt en zo de krachten bundelt.
Ashkal Alwan - Ashkal Alwan is een voorloper in de (beeldende) kunstsector van Libanon en wordt internationaal geroemd om haar vernieuwende trainingsprogramma en festival HomeWorks. In de komende jaren ontwikkelt Ashkal Alwan zich tot een plek waarin wordt samengewerkt met andere kleinere kunst-, ict- en sociaal-politieke organisaties.
Solidarity with Beirut
Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the terrible tragedy in Lebanon. A number of our cultural partners have also been heavily impacted by the blast – directly and indirectly. Even under normal circumstances, they strive on a daily basis to make Lebanon (Beirut) and the Arab world a better place for everyone. They create space for the imagination and stimulate people to think beyond merely existing, within a context that hardly makes this possible.
In a country battling to combat the pandemic – while already facing a political and financial crisis – the work carried out by these partners has become more important than ever in the face of this new drama. The DOEN Foundation is therefore maintaining close contact with all its partners, and other financiers and funds, in order to ascertain how best to help wherever possible.
And this is essential. By way of illustration, the headquarters of both the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture and Ettijahat were destroyed by the blast and a number of Ettijahat employees even suffered minor injuries. Fortunately, the other partners did not suffer any direct damage, but they will most certainly feel the consequences.

Our partners will undoubtedly be launching all manner of initiatives in the near future to help rebuild the country. For this reason, here’s an outline of initiatives already launched, links for donations and links to their websites to stay up to date on developments as they unfold.
Art Lives: Emergency fund - This emergency fund already established during the corona crisis by Mophradat and partners Ettijahat and Action For Hope. The fund is intended to help Arab artists to keep their heads above water in these incredibly difficult times.
Arab Fund for Arts and Culture: crowd funding - This fund can use all the help we can give since the destruction of its headquarters. The crowd-funding campaign should help to make the first steps towards recovery possible.
Culture Resource: solidarity fund - This fund has joined forces with the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture to establish the Solidarity Fund for Arts and Culture Structures. This fund also hopes to support the cultural sector and artists to survive this crisis.
Giro 555: In action together for Beirut - The Cooperating Aid Organisations (SHO) have opened the “Giro 555” bank account for the victims of the explosion in Beirut.

Ashkal Alwan - Ashkal Alwan is a forerunner in the (visual) art sector of Lebanon and is internationally acclaimed for its innovative training programme and HomeWorks festival.
