Accelerating transitions

Since 2018, DOEN has been working with a focus on transitions. This means that DOEN puts four major system transitions at the heart of its approach.

The transition to...

  1. a circular economy;
  2. a society where the commons comes first;
  3. a society in which everyone can participate;
  4. a world in which there is space for radical imagination.

DOEN’s theory of change reflects what DOEN wants to achieve and the role DOEN plays in that.

Accelerating transitions

DOEN’s role in accelerating the four system transitions is to support innovative niches – the pioneers who come up with innovative solutions. DOEN enables change by making these pioneers bigger, stronger and more visible.

DOEN also funds so-called “sector-strengthening” organisations: organisations that make the work of larger groups of pioneers more effective. Examples include Social Enterprise NL (an interest group for social enterprises), LSA (Landelijk Samenwerkingsorgaan Actieve Bewoners) and GOGLA (an interest group for the off-grid sustainable energy sector).

7 opportunities for change

DOEN is supporting pioneers on the basis of seven opportunities for change:

  1. Circular Entrepreneurship
  2. Sustainable Food System
  3. Renewable Energy
  4. Social Entrepreneurship & Inclusion (VriendenLoterij Fonds)
  5. Innovative Community Initiatives
  6. Celebrate the art of change (Vriendenloterij Fonds)
  7. More space for imagination through International Culture & Media
