Lotteries

In 1991, the National Postcode Lottery established the DOEN Foundation, with the following assignment: operate as an extension of the lottery (people and nature) and be complementary to the lottery. Since 1998, DOEN Foundation also receives a yearly contribution from the VriendenLoterij. And in 2004, DOEN Foundation became a beneficiary of the BankGiro Loterij.

From the 2016 net proceeds of the National Postcode Lottery the DOEN Foundation receives a sum of 22,5 million euros. With this contribution we support initiatives within the following programmes: Social Enterprices, Sustainable Energy, New Economy, International Culture and Media and New Meetingplaces. In addition, a contribution goes to DOEN Participaties BV, the investment company of the DOEN Foundation.

From the 2016 net proceeds of the BankGiro Lottery a sum of 4,2 million euros goes to the Bank Giro Lottery Fund, part of DOEN Foundation, to finance cultural initiatives in the Netherlands.

From the 2016 net proceeds of the VriendenLoterij, DOEN Foundation receives over 3 million euros to support the Social Firms programme.

National Postcode Lottery

The National Postcode Lotterij was established in 1989 to support organisations that effectively work towards a more just and greener world. Fifty per cent of the total proceeds of the National Postcode Lottery is purposed to support good causes. The Lottery developed now into the largest charity lottery of the Netherlands, supporting over 99 charity organisations. In 2016, these organisations received a record of 341 million euro. Since 2005, the charity lottery format was successfully introduced in the UK and Sweden, as the People’s Postcode Lottery and the Svenska PostkodLotteriet, to also raise funds for good causes.

BankGiro Lottery
The BankGiro Lotterij is the culture lottery in the Netherlands: half of its proceeds benefit cultural initiatives.
Thanks to the participants, the BankGiro Lottery can support 66 cultural institutions in the Netherlands. This enables beneficiaries to, for example, acquire works of art that complement their existing collection or perform restorations. This year, the lottery was able to award a record sum of over 66,9 million euros to cultural organisations in the Netherlands.

VriendenLottery
The VriendenLotterij supports social initiatives that give back to people with insufficient resources or possibilities and enable them to participate in society and lead full lives. The Lottery also supports people in their ambitions to contribute to society. Participants have the opportunity to select their charity of choice when taking part in the lottery. At the moment, nearly half a million participants play in the lottery for 48 charities and more than 3.300 clubs and associations in the Netherlands. From the 2016 proceeds over 56,6 million euros is awarded to charities, clubs and associations that focus on people’s health and wellbeing.
